Step 2: Take a Boat from Peniche to Berlengas
Boats depart from Peniche Harbor and reach Berlengas in 30–45 minutes, depending on sea conditions.
Types of Boats:
- Large catamarans – more stable, suitable for most travelers
- Smaller speedboats – faster but more sensitive to waves
- In addition to catamarans and speedboats, some operators use small converted fishing boats. These are more basic, can be noticeably rougher in choppy seas
Most visitors go on a day trip, leaving Peniche in the morning and returning in the afternoon.

Distance: Lisbon → Peniche: ~100 km. Porto → Peniche: ~260 km
A Berlengas day trip from Porto is not recommended. Travel time is too long for same-day return. Best option from Porto – travel to Peniche the day before, stay overnight and visit Berlengas the next day.

There is no train station in Peniche.

Duration: 1h15 – 1h30. Route: A8 highway. Parking available near Peniche harbor. This is the most flexible and reliable option, especially for early boats. Search car rentals in Portugal.
- By Bus
Operator: Rede Expressos or FlixBus. Duration: 1h30 – 2h. Arrival: Peniche bus terminal. Then: taxi or walk to the harbor. Bus schedules may not align perfectly with boat departures, so plan carefully.
Do You Need a Permit to Visit Berlengas?
Yes. Berlengas has a daily visitor limit enforced by the Portuguese authorities.

- Create Account: register an account on the site.
- Book your desired date and pay the small access fee (around €3).
- You’ll receive a confirmation/pass, which you must keep with you.
Without a valid permit, you will not be allowed to disembark on the island.
